We Love It: Atelier Cologne

Even though they've only been around for a few years, Birchbox has totally taken the beauty world by storm. I know that M and I are not alone in loving the convenience of having new beauty products shipped to us each month, and it's always exciting to discover a new product that quickly becomes a go-to favorite. Back in the fall, I wrote about the splashy event Birchbox hosted to kick off its Birchbloggers initiative, which provides bloggers with behind-the-scenes access to different beauty products and companies. Recently, I was invited to participate in a more intimate Birchbloggers event and fell head over heels for my new beauty crush - Atelier Cologne.

Atelier is a natural fragrance line, so I was intrigued to try something that would smell slightly different on anyone who wore it, depending on natural body chemistry. As a girl who pledged allegiance to Gap Dream throughout high school and who now usually rotates between Daisy and Ralph, I'm much more used to synthetic scents so I was happy that this event would allow me to "graduate" to something more sophisticated.

From the second that I found out that I was invited, this song has been on a constant loop in my head. Can't lie, I've totally been that weird person singing out loud to herself on the subway platform:

(Sad blogger sidenote: I had typed up 95% of this post and then accidentally deleted the original draft when I inserted this video, so I had to rewrite the entire thing - sooooo frustrating! So I hope you REALLY enjoy the video!)

I arrived at the Atelier store on a trendy block in Nolita for the Birchbloggers event. Atelier is surrounded by many other chic boutiques such as Christian Siriano and my favorite pajama line, BedHead!

Once inside, I was greeted by friendly Birchbox staff members and whisked over to a yummy breakfast buffet filled with yogurt parfaits, bagels, and croissants (I made a beeline to the coffee, of course). While sipping my drink and chatting with my fellow bloggers, I was immediately charmed by the pretty bottles and delicate glass lining the walls - I already wanted to take everything home with me!

After everyone settled in, we were introduced to Gerard Camme, President of Atelier Cologne, and Ross Barry, General Manager. They shared the backstory of the company with us, and also explained some basic fragrance science such as the difference between cologne, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and more (which I was quite grateful for!). It was fascinating to listen to these two men speak so passionately and eloquently about the world of beautiful, natural fragrances.

Finally, it was time to test out the colognes! Gerard and Ross patiently worked their way through the entire Atelier collection, allowing us to test out every single one. I especially enjoyed how the two men balanced each other to give a very full picture of each cologne - Gerard would point out the specific scents we should notice in the top, heart, and base notes, while Ross would paint a colorful story about what type of person/event each fragrance would be most appropriate for.

Each cologne was beautiful in its own way - out of the 16 that we tried, there were only 2 that I don't think I would wear! While I've historically tended to stick with traditionally feminine scents, I've recently become interested in trying out a unisex fragrance so I was pleased that all Atelier colognes cross gender boundaries. Birchbox and Atelier generously gifted each attendee with a 30ml bottle of the cologne of her choice - as you can imagine, it was very difficult to narrow down my selection!

Here are some of my favorites that didn't make my final cut, but that I hope to purchase soon (along with my very un-scientific descriptions):

* Orange Sanguine: Coming into the event, this was the one I expected to be my favorite. The beautiful orange flower smelled very fresh and summery.

* Vanille Insensee: This is not the typical sticky-sweet vanilla that you'll find at the mall! This vanilla is dark and rich, and absolutely scrumptious.

* Ambre Nue: This was an unexpected treat...unfortunately I didn't take many specific notes on what appealed to me about the scent, though I did jot down that Ross mentioned amber's natural aphrodisiac qualities (hey, it can't hurt!).

* Vetiver Fatal: Out of all of my favorite scents, this is the most traditionally masculine, but it was definitely light enough for a woman.

* Silver Iris: Bright and citrusy, this could easily become my new to-go summer fragrance.

So, which cologne wound up as my big winner?

I selected Rose Anonyme! I did not expect to fall in love with this cologne as much as I did because when I think of a rose perfume, I think of a retirement village - however, this is not your grandma's rose! While you certainly get a pretty pop of bright floral fragrance, this rose is spicy and peppery, and that extra kick makes it sexier and more youthful than your typical rose. I just had to have it, and I'm looking forward to wearing it on date nights!

One of the nicest things about Atelier is their partnership with other artisans (which makes sense since the word "atelier" means "workshop" in French). Each 30ml bottle is cloaked in a beautiful leather case that is hand-stamped at the monogram station pictured above. I opted for the gray case and had my full name printed across the back.

Because Atelier generously offered a 20% discount to all of the event attendees, I indulged a bit and purchased a bottle of Bois Blonds, which I kept coming back to throughout the cologne testing. This one is less traditionally feminine than Rose Anonyme, and much more of a departure for me. It has a slight woodsy scent, but the best way I can describe it is that it smells like the best version of just coming out of the shower - totally clean, fresh, and natural.

In addition to being super generous by giving us these lovely colognes and leather pouches, Atelier also sent us on our way with three cologne samples, plus tubs of their brand-new body wash and lotion. The lotion is silky smooth, and oh-so-lux!

All in all, it was a fantastic morning that gave me a deeper appreciation for the beauty of natural fragrances. Atelier definitely has a new (slightly obsessed) fan in me, and I'm looking forward to visiting the boutique again soon.

If you would like to shop for your perfect cologne, make sure you pop by the shop! One of the fantastic services they offer is private shopping - you can organize a group of friends and contact General Manager Ross Barry to set a time to visit before the store opens to the public, and allow Ross to help you find your best match (while sipping mimosas, naturally)! Contact him at to set up your appointment.

A HUGE thank you to Birchbox and Atelier Cologne for hosting this amazing event!

What's your fragrance style? Are you already an Atelier devotee, or are you a newbie like me?
