2014 Resolutions: 2nd Quarter Check-In

It's time for Round Two of our 2014 resolution check-ins! We're trying to stay on track and accountable by reporting back on our progress each quarter - you can catch up on our first check-in here, and read on to see how we've been doing these past few months!

My first quarter check-in had some mixed results, but I'm happy to say that certain things have improved since then! Let's go down my original list of resolutions and see how I'm stacking up:

* Go on more vacations
This one was successfully checked off thanks to my February vacation to Florida, and I just booked my flights for a girls' trip to Las Vegas in August! I'm so excited to soak up the sun for a fun long weekend with some of my best ladies. If anyone has any Vegas recommendations, please send them my way!

* Cut out alcohol on weekdays
Well, they can't all be winners. While I've definitely reduced my intake for health reasons, it can still be hard to say no to a mid-week happy hour cocktail or a glass of wine with dinner.

* Implement a "no spending week" every month
This resolution is still my biggest failure to date. It just seems like there isn't a single week where it's possible for me to not spend any money! Realistically, this resolution probably will not be successful this summer since there are so many outings already planned, but I hope to hop back on the wagon with this resolution in the fall. Have any of you ever tried a "no spend" week, or even month?

* Be a game show contestant
If you saw my recent post, then you know that I'm giddy with excitement that I was recently selected to be a contestant on Who Wants to be a Millionaire! YAY! I'm super nervous about it but also really happy that I was able to make this dream come true so quickly (especially since by the time of my first check-in, I hadn't even auditioned for the show yet!). I'm keeping the details quiet for now but will let everyone know when my episode airs, and will follow up the airing with a full recap of the entire experience.

* Improve my fitness routine
Well, I still haven't tried a spin class or started a regular morning gym routine, but I did try a new weights class (BodyPump) and have started going straight to the gym by my office after work, so I'm counting this one as a success! There is still plenty of room for improvement but I'm definitely pleased with my fitness progress.

* Cook more
I'm still no Bobby Flay, but I've been pretty good this year about cooking a dish or two on Sundays and doling them out for lunches and easy dinners throughout the week. I'm never going to be a natural whiz in the kitchen, but I'm slowly improving and even hope to take a cooking class soon.

* Be a more supportive friend and family member
This one is an ongoing struggle - some days I do well and other days I know I can do better. How do you show your loved ones how much you care?

Can you believe it’s July already and that 2014 is officially half over?! I’m loving these quarterly resolution check-ins and I can honestly say this is the first year where I’ve been focused on actually keeping my resolutions for the entire year! Overall I think I did ok this past quarter. For the most part, my big quest of Health, Wealth and Happiness has found a middle ground, but I’m ok with that because I feel like I’ve been mindful of the resolutions but not letting them completely take over. So here’s some of the highlights (and lows) of the 2nd quarter:

  • Keeping Baby M Healthy – The biggest resolution that I’ve had to reassess is breastfeeding Baby M for a full year. Recently we’ve started supplementing with formula since my supply has been naturally going down, and honestly, I’m completely ok with it! He doesn’t mind the formula one bit, I’m happy I was able to successfully breastfeed for 9 months, and he’s a happy and growing little guy. And as I’m still making all of his solid foods, so I’d say this area is a big success, since I’m doing what works for us, and we’re doing great with it!
  • Shop my own Closet – I continue to find new things from the back of my closet, the most exciting being a Milly dress that still had its tags on it, that I was able to wear last weekend to an engagement party!
  • Date Night – Grill Guy and I had a whole weekend away for our 5 year anniversary, and it was so fantastic! And in addition, we have a jam packed summer with lots of fun events coming up that allow us to get all dressed up and have a night on the town. And I’d actually like to add in that in addition to date night, I’ve been able to also have some much needed Gals nights, including one on the calendar next week with B!
Somewhere in the middle:
  • Coupons – I’m still not couponing to the fullest extent, but have had some good runs in the past couple months, including recently where I saved over $30 on a $70 bill at CVS (make sure you’re all taking advantage of the digital coupons that go directly to your ExtraCare card!) so I’d say I’m somewhere in the middle on this one, and I’m ok with it. I’m not making myself crazy with the clipping, but still manage to save here and there! 
  • Trying to get active – I still would like to do more in this area, but as a (literal!) step in the right direction, I recently got involved in a walking challenge that my company is sponsoring, which has the added bonus of benefitting world hunger, since ever step counts towards a donation!
Needs Help:

  • Packing lunch – Ok, there’s no sugarcoating this one, I’ve just flat out failed on this! I need to find a way to make this happen that actually sticks so please pass along any suggestions since I need all the help I can get!
  • Finish what I start - I have somewhat of an excuse on this one, as my craft room was badly flooded and damaged this past April, so I wasn’t able to finish my mosaicing project for Baby M, BUT the craft room is newly back in action, so no excuses for Q3!!

  2. Ive only just started packing lunch. On an evening the last thing you really want to think about is packing lunch but so worth it when it does happen. I need to improve on cooking also ...

  3. I like the "No spending" thing. I've tried to do that but its been too much. Breaking it up into a small amount of time - like a week, is BRILLIANT!
