Five on Friday {September 5, 2014}

Happy first Friday of September! Have we all survived this first unofficial week of fall? This week was a lot smoother for me than the last one because last Tuesday, I got violently sick at work and had to leave early. I'll spare you all the nasty details except for one, because it's just that ridiculous - I threw up in a garbage can in a subway station and as that was happening, some guy decided to toss his newspaper out in the same can on top of my head. Ugh. Only in New York!

Anyway, that led to a strep throat diagnosis which meant several days of constant bed rest, Gatorade, doctor visits, water, and pills, pills, pills. This experience has made me so grateful for my health, which I too often take for granted. Because I live alone, I pretty much had no human contact for 4 days, so today's 5 features my top entertainment essentials for sick days:

ONE | Sex and the City Marathon

I tried flipping through channels for a long time to find something to watch, but for some reason nothing was appealing to me. Luckily, I had a light bulb moment and quickly busted out my trusty supply of SATC DVDs - they never fail! I worked my way through most of season three, which includes the episode where Samantha gets sick and feels alone (I could relate!) along with 3 episodes that made our list of Top 10 Sex and the City Episodes (catch up with Part 1 and Part 2 and let us know if you agree with our selections).

TWO | Twitter parody feeds

I'm not a huge Twitter user, but spent some time scrolling through my feed during my sick days and developed a new appreciation for two parody accounts that I'm following. If you went to college in the early 00's and AOL Instant Messenger was your jam, then please run over to @yourawaymessage. Filled with Laguna Beach references, heart-on-your-sleeve song lyrics (I especially love the "Konstantine" shout-out, especially since I'm pretty sure I had those lyrics in one of my away messages at some point...sigh), and cryptic passive aggressive messages to people who should know who they are, this account is a nostalgic treasure trove.

Even if you weren't around for the glory days of AOL IM, we can all appreciate some Bravo TV! M and I are obsessed with pretty much anything Andy Cohen throws our way, but as Jersey gals, we have a particular love for The Real Housewives of New Jersey as well as its breakout star, Milania. This little girl has a sassy streak that just cannot be contained, which is why the Twitter parody account @TheFauxMilaniaG is so spot-on...the tweets are completely absurd, yet you can actually picture Milania saying these things.

TWO | Lots of reading material

Don't worry, not all of my sick reading was Twitter-based! I managed to make a nice dent in my summer reading list by finishing three books - what should I read next?

FOUR | Buzzfeed quizzes

Back to the online entertainment - there is seriously a Buzzfeed quiz for pretty much anything, and unlike final exams, these quizzes are actually mindless and fun! My favorite quiz result of the week was when M and I both took "Which Career Should You Actually Have?" She received Designer and I received Writer, which makes us a pretty complementary blogging duo!

FIVE | Sweet treats

When my doctor tells me to eat more ice cream and ice pops to sooth my very sore throat, who am I to argue? And when I needed something soft to eat, Magnolia cupcakes were clearly the best road to a strong and healthy recovery :)

What are the things that keep you sane when you're sick and feeling terrible?

Thanks to our gals AmandaJennieAmyKarli, Clare, Rebecca, Katie, and Lauren for hosting today's link-ups!

    1. It wasn't my favorite Emily Giffin book, but I think it was better than I had expected simply because I had read so many bad reviews. It's a quick, fun read!

Have you read any of Jojo Moyes books yet? Me Before You and One Plus One were two of my favorite books I've read this year so far! Happy Friday!

  14. I'm so sorry you had strep. That is so miserable. :( I am with you on so many things here! I love SATC and have the complete set. I should really go back and watch them again. :) That away message Twitter account cracks me up every time because my friends and I were so like that in high school...especially the Konstantine thing. Konstantine was my absolutely favorite song in high school. I'm I had "I'm not your star...isn't that what you said?" or "It's 11:11, now you want to talk." in my away message at some point. And those books too! I finished One & Only recently though it definitely wasn't my favorite Emily Giffin book. I thought that relationship was a little weird. Haha.

    1. Haha Konstantine was totally my jam...it was soooo dramatic and over-the-top emotional, which is why I loved it! I'm with you, The One & Only was fine for sick day reading but it was definitely my least favorite of her books.

  15. How did I not know about @yourawaymessage?! This speaks to my former 20 year heart like no other - haha! And while I know it was completely miz that you were sick for a week, I totally relished the extra Gal time we had through our extended phone calls that week!

  26. You are too cute - SATC seriously got me through high school, college (to the point that some of my college papers started posing questions, a la Carrie Bradshaw - that was a habit that needed to be broken!). I believe in its healing powers - and I do hope you're feeling MUCH better. It seems like you've got your sick remedy down though - I'm pretty sure Magnolia cupcakes could solve all the problems in the world.
I NEVER heard of those Twitter accounts, but I'm following away now (and cracking up). Thanks for passing them along, girl!
Again, hope you're feeling better - sending lots of positive energy your way so you can be 100% :)

    1. I'm soooo much better now, yay! One of the most disappointing things about being so sick was that I missed a SATC trivia night that a bunch of my friends attended (at Poco on Avenue B) - at least I was productive and did some studying for the next time we go!

  31. wow i LOVE sex and the city. I literally can't imagine my life without that show, i compare everyday events life decisions and even sometimes places to go out to based on that show....I know i'm a bit dramatic. Speaking of subways, if it's the nyc ones then that totally makes sense why some rude new yorker would throw his newspaper on your head at the same time you were puking your guts out, not cool, but still the best city in the world and I LOVE IT, another reason why SATC is amazing! Thanks for the awesome post look forward to reading more.
