Five on Friday: Halloween edition!

DIY glitzy Halloween pumpkins

Happy Halloween Eve! Is everyone excited for the big day tomorrow? T and I are hosting a small daytime Halloween gathering (might as well start early with the costumes and candy!), so I took off from work today to prep for that and to spend some quality time with his parents who are visiting from out of town. Here are the five (Halloween themed!) items I'm loving this week!

Semi-homemade costumes

I'm giddy with excitement to reveal my Halloween costume (check our Instagram tomorrow!) but for now, all I'll say is that it meets my top 2 Halloween requirements: 1) it allows me to wear a wig, and 2) it has a store-bought base that I've been able to jazz up! Semi-homemade looks are always my favorite type of costume to put together since it's not like I'm ever going to be able to sew something from scratch, but I still like to customize my costume. Hands down, this DIY pageant girl costume is still my all-time favorite Halloween look (and I have the costume contest awards to prove it!).

Dog Halloween Costumes

Is there anything more adorable than a dog in a Halloween costume? M's dog Fred loves the spotlight (check out that camera-ready gaze), so of course we had to create a custom Queen Bee costume when she entered (and placed in) a dog Halloween costume contest. Does your pup get in on the holiday fun?

Candy Corn Bark

One of the great pains of adulthood is not being able to stuff your face with free candy on Halloween (well, unless you have a kid who is old enough to trick-or-treat but too young to actually eat all of the that case, congrats!). Want to recapture the post-trick-or-treating sugar high? Our Candy Corn Bark is the ultimate Halloween party sweet nibble.

Halloween Nails

For a slightly more subtle approach to the holiday, this Halloween manicure provides the perfect mix of glitz, textures, and the classic orange/black color scheme!

Halloween Hand Sanitizer Party Favor

After ringing lots of strange doorbells all day, you'll definitely want to keep those germs far away from your home. At your Halloween party, skip the extra sugar in favor of this unique, cute, and practical favor - a bottle of Halloween hand sanitizer adorned with a "Germs are scary" tag will never go to waste!

As a bonus, if you're still looking for the perfect party snacks for this weekend, make sure you check out our Top 5 Pumpkin Recipes for everything from pumpkin cocktails to pumpkin mac and cheese! Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Top 10 Favorite (Not So Scary) Halloween Movies

Hey Gals! Halloween is one of my very favorite holidays and I'm so excited that it's only 2 days away. To get into the Halloween spirit, today I'm sharing my very official top 10 favorite, not so scary, Halloween movies of all time.  I'm not much for horror or gore, but that doesn't mean I can't get into the Halloween spirit with my movie viewing! So mix yourself up an Apple Cider Martini, crack open the Candy Corn Bark, and snuggle up on the couch for an all-day Halloween movie fest with these picks:

The Nightmare Before Christmas
What's better than a Halloween AND Christmas movie all in one?! Plus there's fun songs, awesome stop-motion animation, and even a love story! Plus it's kid and adult friendly, so this one is definitely a must watch in my book.

Ok, so maybe I snuck one scary movie on this list, but I'm sure any true horror enthusiast would consider this one child's play. But I couldn't resist including Scream because if I'm going to watch a scary movie, it's going to at least have an all-star 90's cast to go along with it!

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
No Halloween movie is complete without this classic. Plus, I may be a bit biased since Little M and Fred went as Charlie and Snoopy last year!

Please tell me I'm not the only one who had a big fat crush on Devon Sawa growing up?! Even though he's literally in the movie for about 5 minutes at the end, this movie was on constant repeat every October throughout middle school and makes me completely nostalgic just thinking about it! And how awesome was that secret roller coaster in the basement?

Addams Family Values
I know this is the sequel, but this one is so much better in my opinion! Joan Cusack can do no wrong in my book, plus I love when Wednesday and Pugsley get shipped off to summer camp.

The Craft
This is basically the Wiccan version of Mean Girls, so need I say more?

Hocus Pocus

 SJP as a ditzy witch? Yes, please!

Practical Magic

Yes, this is a romantic comedy, but it's still totally suitable for Halloween because it's about witches!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
You can't have a Halloween movie list without Rocky Horror. Plus if you really want to get into the Halloween (and campy!) spirit, hunt down a midnight showing and get dressed up in your finest costume, and sing along to all of the amazing music.

And last but not least, one of my absolute favorites - Beetlejuice! Another one that's not exact an obvious Halloween movie, but what better way to get you in the spirit than with a possessed (and musical!) dinnerparty?!

What are some of your favorite Halloween movies?! Am I being a total wimp by leaving the scary ones off of my list, or are you like me, and prefer to skip the gore?

Caramel Apple Oatmeal Crumble

When it comes to dessert, I'm usually a chocolate gal all the way! However, thanks to my recent apple picking excursion, I've been trying to find new ways to incorporate apples into my meals which has made me rethink my chocolate-only dessert rule.

T and I have been hosting several small dinners for friends who want to come over and see our new apartment, and this yummy caramel apple oatmeal crumble has been on heavy rotation in those menus! The blend of warm crumble and cold ice cream melts in your mouth, and the gooey caramel mixed with the fresh apples and spicy cinnamon just screams "FALL!" It's easier to make than apple pie but every bit as delicious, and would make a welcome addition to your Thanksgiving table (or, you know, to your Netflix and chill on the couch in sweatpants night!).

Caramel Apple Oatmeal Crumble

* 4 large apples, chopped
* 1 packet of oatmeal cookie mix
* 1/2 cup butter, melted
* 3/4 cup caramel sauce
* 3 teaspoons cinnamon
* Vanilla ice cream
* Cinnamon sticks

* Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

* Stir the butter and oatmeal cookie mix in a large bowl until the texture is crumbly.

* Combine the apples, 1/2 cup of the caramel sauce, and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon in a second bowl. Spoon into a 13x9 glass baking dish (make sure to use cooking spray to prep the dish first). Add the cookie mix on top.

* Bake for 35-40 minutes (or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown).

* Spoon into bowls and top with a scoop (or two) of vanilla ice cream. Dust the ice cream with the remaining cinnamon, drizzle with the remaining caramel, and garnish with cinnamon sticks.

Mmmm...what's your favorite apple-based dessert?

Five on Friday: {October 23, 2015}

Happy Friday Gals! I've been slowly trying to kick my jet lag after my whirlwind trip to LA, and even though it was an amazing trip, I'm definitely glad to be back home!  I'm excited to have a pretty low key weekend ahead, and to kick things off, I'm sharing my 5 faves of the week:

LA Trip!
I'm planning to do a proper recap of my LA trip (including a whole Wheel recap), but I can't resist posting a couple of pics from this amazing (and quick!) trip:

Dinner at SUR!

 And then seeing a picture of Lisa Vanderpump made completely out of jelly beans...

Authentic LA tacos

And sunsets in Venice Beach

And more sunsets because they were that beautiful

New Emojis!

If you follow us on Instagram, then you know that we were all too excited to update to ios9 and get all of the new emojis. Now that we can properly express our love of tacos and champagne our life is pretty much complete... though after having some tacos and margaritas last night, I realized, where is the margarita emoji?!

Favorite Song

I'm officially on the T Swift Bandwagon (Squadwagon?!).. I've always been a fan, but her latest hit Wildest Dream has been playing nonstop on my iTunes - I just can't get enough!

New Planner Help

So I'm officially in the market for my next planner and need help! I need any and all recommendations since there seem to be so many amazing ones out there. For 2015 I've been using a Plum Planner, but it isn't really the best fit for me. The layout is vertical, and I definitely feel limited in that format. Additionally, it's a little bulky for my liking, though it's definitely not a deal breaker since I use a pretty large tote. I've looked into the very popular Erin Condren, as well as, the Emily Ley, Day Planner, and May Book Planner (p.s. - what's with all of these planners rhyming?! Ley, Day May!??!) . So what planner do you all recommend?! I'm ready to buy my next one!

Not Little M, but I can guarantee he'll be just as cute in this costume!
To say I'm excited about Halloween is an understatement! I've always been a huge fan, but now that Little M is big enough to (almost) understand the holiday, it totally takes it to the next level. He's learned the phrase "Trick or Treat" and is super excited to dress up as a brown dog for Halloween (just like his best bud, Fred). I'm pretty sure he's going to be the cutest dog that ever was (sorry Fred), and I can't wait to go trick or treating with him this year!

What's everyone up to this weekend?

Cheers to April, AmandaJennieKarliRebecca, Katie, Heather, and Tif for hosting today's link-ups!

Crispy Rice Treats by Treat House

Sugary, gooey, and oozing with yummy marshmallow flavors - Treat House's signature crispy rice treats put a decidedly sophisticated spin on a nostalgic childhood sweet.

After a wildly successful bake sale back in October 2011, the Russell family realized they had a very special confection on their hands and a gourmet treat business was born. I was lucky enough to recently sample some of their delicious offerings!

Let's start with the presentation - how adorable are these brightly colored, perfectly portioned, neatly cut 2-inch squares?! I love that the packaging is kept clear and simple to allow the beautiful colors (and edible glitter!) of the squares to really pop.

S'mores, caramel sea salt, chocolate pretzel, coffee cinnamon doughnut...these are just some of the many decadent flavors offered by Treat House (not to mention their seasonal offerings that update throughout the year). Each and every one was fantastic - I really appreciated how these crispy rice treats incorporate the individual flavors in both the base and the marshmallow topping. Also, the garnish on each one not only enhanced the flavor, but added more dimension and visual appeal to the treats.

It's tough to play favorites but if I had to pick just one, my favorite would have to be Birthday Cake. I love the pretty blue topping mixed with colorful sprinkles!

One of the best things about Treat House is that you can customize the top of each treat with your own logo or design. These would be awesome for a wedding, a company retreat, or any kind of theme party (though we're definitely partial to seeing our blog logo so beautifully displayed!).

Treat House has store locations in New York and New Jersey, but you don't have to be a local gal to get in on the sweetness because they offer nationwide shipping! They also have gluten free, dairy free, and nut free packs so there is something for every tastebud and diet.

If you're looking for an artisanal, personalized gift or a crowd-pleasing treat for your next party, give Treat House a try - they will not disappoint!
