Five on Friday {January 8, 2016}

Happy Friday! We're only a week into 2016, but I already feel like it's been an exciting whirlwind of activity. Some of that is probably due to the fact that at the beginning of this week, I started a very exciting new job! There's nothing better than a clean slate at the beginning of a new year, and after reading M's post about priorities versus resolutions, I'm determined to be more mindful about how I spend my time this year. Now, let's dive into today's top 5!

New Year's feasting

Ok, technically this is from slightly over a week ago, but this meal was just too delish not to share! T and I opted to stay home on New Year's Eve to cook a fancy dinner together, cheer on Alabama (hence the team wineglasses in the background, which were a sweet gift from Pam), and watch the Times Square ball drop from the comfort of our couch. We might have been a bit ambitious in our menu planning, since it consisted of a cheese board with roasted garlic (my favorite!) as an appetizer, followed by individual beef wellingtons (!) and a side dish of mushroom truffle cream pasta (oh, and some broccoli too, just to pretend some part of this was remotely healthy). I've never been a huge fan of going out on New Year's Eve so this low-key celebration was the perfect way for me to ring in 2016! Also, we all know that I'm no kitchen whiz, but it was super fun to play sous chef and let T work his magic...those wellingtons were crazy delicious!

Favorite new salad

And speaking of crazy delicious...T and I hosted a small New Year's Day brunch and tried out a bunch of new recipes, including this lovely peach and arugula salad. Yum! We'll be bringing you the full brunch details soon, along with a review of the cookbook that we used for all of the recipes!

19th Century Tinder
This article about the bizarre flirting habits of 19th century men had me literally laughing out loud, and also questioning my life choices for reaching this age without collecting a single "acquaintance card." Do yourself a favor and read the article to learn all about this awesomely awkward pre-Tinder mating ritual!

Favorite new cocktail

Has anyone else tried out the Jack Daniels Winter Jack seasonal cider?! You guys, it is seriously my new favorite thing! Just heat up a cup along with a splash of pure apple cider for a soothing, delicious, slightly spicy beverage. It may be slightly too early to call it, but this totally has a shot of being my favorite new find of 2016 :)

2016 Luck

Funny story...when I went to the liquor store to pick up some things for our New Year's Day brunch, the shop owner was behind the register and he congratulated me on being his very first customer of 2016 (I'm sure my parents are so proud of me!). As thanks for being such a loyal customer, he handed me...whatever that thing in the picture above is! He said it would bring both of us good luck for the coming year for me to have it, so I am now the proud owner of a BuzzBallz Blueberry Blitz, haha...has anyone ever seen this or tried it before? I may not drink it, but I'm certainly not about to toss a good luck charm!

Here's hoping everyone is having a great start to 2016 and a wonderful weekend ahead!

Cheers to April, AmandaJennieKarliRebecca, Katie, Heather, and Tif for hosting today's link-ups!

  6. That's too funny that he congratulated you on being the first customer of 2016 and then gave you a prize! Your NYE sounds absolutely perfect! We kind of did the same thing, but my sister cooked for us. I have to admit being the sous chef is a lot more fun than being the regular chef sometimes. Hope you have a great weekend!
