Story Behind the Pic

Today I'm teaming up with our gal Elle for her fun "Story Behind the Pic" link-up, and I'm digging back into the B & M archives for this one...

This is M and me in 2008 at her engagement brunch, back when I never met a blond highlight I didn't like! So if you're wondering why are we so giddily displaying a random H&M bag at such a special event, here's the story behind the pic...

Before we were the avid crafters you know today, our DIY efforts were slightly less skillful but that never stopped us from attempting big projects and often biting off more than we could chew! M had decided that she wanted to bake and decorate heart-shaped, chocolate-dipped cookies for all of the engagement brunch guests. As her trusty Maid of Honor, I made the trip up to the city (because I was still living in PA at the time) to help her with this task. At first, things seemed to be going well:

We thought we'd knock these cookies out in an hour or two, and still have plenty of time afterwards to throw on some sparkles and hit up a cocktail lounge or two.

However, as we've now come to expect, this project took way longer than we had originally anticipated. Some of the cookies were burning and others were overcooked; some of the hearts broke apart before we could decorate them; the chocolate got too gloppy on certain cookies; the cookies wouldn't dry; the plastic wrap was cut too large...it was one obstacle after another!

There were several moments where we wanted to give up and abandon it all together, but I had already decided that my role as Maid of Honor also made me the Taskmaster, so I had to throw some tough love M's way and together (along with some help from GG), we soldiered on.

These cookies took ALL NIGHT to finish - no joke, we literally did nothing else. Finally, sometime in the middle of the night after lots of sweat and tears (but thankfully no blood), the last purple ribbon was tied and they were finally ready for the big party!

We got hardly any sleep but it didn't matter because we were all feeling quite smug that the cookies had risen from the ashes to become a successful, completed project. Of course, we felt the need to pose with our favorite cookies the next day:

Which brings me back to the original picture at the top...because we had spent so much time on the cookies, M was in a big rush the next morning to finish wrapping all of the bridesmaid gifts, so mine got tossed in the closest available item, which was the H&M bag! As you can see, I loved it because it is so representative of our friendship...we were willing to sacrifice anything in order to get the crafting finished, and despite the project being totally frustrating, we still managed to have fun and make some great memories that night! I think everyone thought we were nuts when we both started cackling and fawning over the beautiful H&M bag at the party, but then again, I think most people kind of expect us to be a little crazy whenever we're together!

  6. Love these stories of you girls back in the day, and those cookies still looked amazing and I love the presentation. Every time I set out to make something for a party, I always think it won't be a big deal and it ends up taking forever. Sorry you never got to hit up a cocktail lounge that evening, but at least you girls had fun together and the cookies were a success <3

  7. That's such a cute story! My friend had a similar experience for her wedding. She decided to make funfetti cookies as her favors, and she literally spent the week before the wedding and half the day before the wedding making those cookies. All of the bridesmaids helped her out, but she still hasn't been able to eat them since!
